Tony Stewart Statement
FORT WORTH, Texas (July 10, 2008): The following is a statement from
Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage regarding today’s announcement
by two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart that he will
become a co-owner/driver with Stewart Haas Racing beginning in 2009: “Tony’s
announcement is a bold step and would be comparable to Troy Aikman walking away
from
the Dallas Cowboys back in the mid-90s to join an expansion team. Tony’s
success is
important to the sport because he is so popular with our fan base. His
working-man appeal,
his ‘take this job and shove it’ approach rings clear with that base. Many
of our fans can
identify with him and wish they were in his position. So as a sport, we need him
to be
successful in this move.
“Tony and I talk about a lot of things and I knew he was interested in team
ownership and the next stage of his career. Such a move is not unprecedented.
Dale
Earnhardt had won a Cup Series championship with Osterlund Racing in 1980, but
he left
that team in the middle of the next season to join a then-mid-level team –
Richard
Childress Racing. And that worked out pretty well with six more championships. I
hope the
same happens for Tony and Stewart Haas Racing.”
