Goodyear statement concerning Eric Medlen’s tire April 10, 2007 - Goodyear’s engineers and research scientists have now been able to piece together and examine the complete right rear tire from Eric Medlen’s car after the remaining 10 percent of the tire was recovered. The inspection revealed that the air loss was the result of a puncture to the inside sidewall. The cause of the puncture damage to the tire is still under investigation. Goodyear has shared the results of its analysis with both John Force Racing and the NHRA. This specific tire code – D2420 – has been determined to be structurally sound and will continue to be used in both Funny Car and Top Fuel events. Our thoughts and prayers are with Eric’s family and everyone at John Force Racing.
COOK CAPTURES FIRST CAREER
FASTRAK SERIES WIN Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for Fastrak racing. The bias-ply dirt track tires Goodyear builds for Fastrak competitors allow teams to race within a reasonable budget. The sanctioning body has 11 regional series reaching across the nation and sanctions weekly racing at tracks all over the country. The Green Valley race attracted 33 cars to the three-eighths-mile clay oval. The drivers came from six states to compete in the 50-lap race. Cook started on the outside of the front row and took the lead before the first lap was completed. John Llewellyn finished second, followed by Tim Busha, Chris Ferguson and Jack Pennington. Busha started 19th. Jeff Fields turned in the fastest lap during time trials but started fifth after the Fastrak inversion procedure was put into effect. Goodyear, NASCAR at Martinsville WEEKEND NASCAR RACE REPORT – 4-2-07 Event: NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Goody's Cool Orange 500 (Race No. 6 of 36) Location: Martinsville Speedway, a .526—mile oval in Martinsville, Va. Weather: Mostly cloudy and warm (some showers) Winner: Jimmie Johnson, driver of the #48 Lowe’s Chevrolet from Hendrick Motorsports Top-five finishers: Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Race recap: Jimmie Johnson fought off teammate Jeff Gordon for the final 53 laps to win the Nextel Cup race on Sunday. Gordon tried mightily to get past Johnson, eventually coming up 0.065 seconds and a bumper short at the checkered flag. Johnson averaged 70.70.258 mph on the circuit’s shortest and oldest track. For a while, it looked as if Dale Earnhardt Jr. would get this victory. "Junior" led the most laps on the day with 137 of 500 and was leading when rain halted the event with 143 laps to go. Johnson decided to pit after the 32-minute red-flag delay ended, setting him up for a run to the finish. When Earnhardt Jr. pitted 17 laps later, he gave up the lead and that set up the Johnson/Gordon battle. In all, there were 14 lead changes among nine drivers and 13 caution flags for a total of 93 laps during the second outing of NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow. Despite his second-place finish, Gordon held onto the top spot in the championship standings. He now leads Jeff Burton by 28 points after six races. Johnson is now in third place overall, 60 points behind Gordon. The Nextel Cup Series is off next weekend and returns to action at Texas Motor Speedway on April 15. Companion event: Mike Skinner led 246 of 253 laps to win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville on Saturday. It was Skinner's third straight victory in the series. He also leads the championship standings by 94 points over defending champion Todd Bodine.
GOODYEAR-SHOD CARS WIN FIVE TIMES
IN RAIN PLAGUED NHRA RACE Capps won in the Funny Car category. It was the first race for the NHRA competitors since the death of Funny Car racer Eric Medlen, who crashed during a practice run 13 days earlier. “I’m going to send the trophy to Eric’s dad and buy another one and send it to his mom,” Capps said. The rain that drenched the facility Saturday forced the organizers to postpone some sportsman racing until the following weekend. As a result, eight categories produced a final round Sunday. Goodyear’s season total of 19 victories in national NHRA competition so far this season leads all tiremakers. The drivers that won on Goodyear rubber included Capps, J.R. Todd (in Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock), Bill Reichert (Top Alcohol Dragster) and Brian Hough (Top Alcohol Funny Car). In addition, Scott Cannon advanced to the final round in Pro Mod competition and there were two Goodyear-equipped cars in the semi-final round of Competition Eliminator. The last two rounds of Competition Eliminator will be finished the weekend of April 6-7. Hough collected his third victory in national competition. He gave much of the credit for the win to his Goodyear tires. Hough said, “We ran five passes between 5.60 (seconds) and 5.63. That’s some consistency. These tires are consistent.” Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear’s sales and marketing manager for drag racing, noted that Goodyear-shod cars won both the Alcohol classes, filled all four of the semi-final spots in the TAD field and 22 of the 35 starting spots in the two Alcohol categories. “Our car counts in the two Alcohol classes continue to look very good,” Ashbee said. The washout of the second day of qualifying and the rain-delayed start of Sunday’s eliminations made it difficult for the teams to prepare their cars. Line said his team had to rework several things. “There were a lot of things we did differently,” Line said. “(His crew) changed a bunch of stuff.” Line set a track record for speed in the Pro Stock category in Friday’s qualifying rounds (208.59 mph) and Jeg Coughlin set a track elapsed time record (6.649 seconds) on the same day. Whit Bazemore was the fastest qualifier in Top Fuel and Cruz Pedregon was the fastest in Funny Car. More information on Goodyear Racing is available at www.racegoodyear.com.
