"It has been great year." Bucher said, "Even when we struggled as a small team with accidents and an ill handling race car, we fought back. That is important to me as a rookie competitor." For the 2003 season Bucher will have a new stock car and will set his sights even higher as he tries to reach victory lane and capture the track championship. MATT BUCHER LOOKING FORWARD TO SOPHOMORE YEAR To gain experience on the mechanics and handling of a late model stock car, Matt helped his close friend and now fellow competitor, Mark McFarland , the last few years, before joining the ranks of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge as a driver at the age of sixteen. Receiving help from his Dad and sponsors; Action Concrete Supply Company, Bob’s Used Cars, Dominion Motors, ICI Auto Color, B&G Towing, Orbit Construction Company, Matt was ready to hit the high banks at Old Dominion Speedway in 2002. In 2002 Matt Bucher competed in his rookie year in a late model stock car in
the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge at Old Dominion Speedway in
Manassas, Va. O.D.S. is the closest Nascar sanction track to his home in
Winchester Va.. Most people start out in a lesser division and gain experience
and in about two years move up to the late model stock cars. But Dennis Bucher,
Matt’s dad and crew chief thought with Matt’s experience in go karts , he
was ready for this advance class of stock cars. Matt found great success in the
karting world with many local and state wins plus numerous state championships.
Matt competed in all but 3 races this year and finished 15th in the points
battle. Hopefully Matt will win the rookie of the year honors. As of November
30, the Old Dominion Speedway is still in the process of determining the Rookie
of the Year Award. The final decision is decided by O.D.S. promoter Dick Gore.
Who will win the award will be announced at the O.D.S. Matt earned the respect of his competitors, track officials and staff and the
fan alike.
